First playable scene

As per usual this weeks project seems to be causing me quite a bit of trouble. Aside from my software being extremely slow and trying to take 36 minutes to bake the scene, I have also managed to forget a lot of what we have learnt in previous tutorials so I have been going back and looking over those.

Before my software crashed on me several times to the point of suffocating my laptop and completely restarting it, again.... I managed to create the scene for ‘main street’ and the players home. Although you can not access the shops at the moment, this may be something I need to rethink when going at the game again within the next week. I have re thought the designs and I am considering having the NPCs outside their respective shops rather than inside (for time management reasons).
Here is a screen shot from during the development of the town.
Notice the baking ETA
It started on 1 hour 30 mins......

Although I would have originally liked to have a third person point of view, I am currently working with first person views and focusing on object collections and monsters.
Although there are no monsters in this scene I have to start collecting the assets for the next scene which is the forest scene where most of the battling will happen.

I am also trying to get the right skybox and lighting into my scene, using point lights around the houses and shops.

All in all, the game still needs a lot of work but I’ve gotten more done then I thought I would at the beginning

  1. Hey Alex,

I'm sorry to hear about all the trouble you're having with this project I can't imagine how frustrating it must have been when your laptop decided to have a moment in the middle of your project. Hopefully you can get back on track with your game soon. I definitely think that you should put NPCs outside of their shops if it would mean saving you time but as well try not to make this game too complicated and give yourself too much work to do. I am also having trouble with the third person view in my game so if you manage to figure it out I would appreciate it if you could explain it to me. I hope your laptop doesn't give up on you like that again and good luck!

  2. Hi Alex

I really loved reading your project blog for week 8 and am glad you got your first playable scene done . Sorry to hear about the issues you have been having with it taking its time making the scene, as I have been having Issues with Unity myself, But am finally getting somewhere with it from re-watching old Unity tutorials from previous weeks. I was curious have you considered switching the aspect to first person as it would make it easier for you to focus on other things you wish to fix for example the lighting in your scene through light box.

Overall though I like the look of the scene you have produced for the player in the screenshot overhead and the aesthetic you have chosen for your game. Best of luck in the coming weeks with the game I am sure you will do great. You got this !!

  3. Hello there Alex good evening to you and that. Like others have said I am sorry to hear about what has been happening to your game at the minute. From what I can see of your game that you have created thus far, it does look really pleasing and nice to the eyes., I like the fact your game's scene also has many shops strewn along it, giving your town area a real authentic look to it all. You mentioned in your post about battling monsters during the game, I'm sure this has likely been answered in other posts before, but how will battles work against the monsters? Is it a case of taking it in turns and seeing who can damage who first? Or is it just go for broke and hope you can get lucky with your attacks? Regarding Unity's baking light problems, I recommend reading online about it and there might be an answer. Hope you can succeed at this game.

  4. Hi Alex,

Sorry to hear about your problems with Unity- I've been in a similar state myself and find it difficult to work around. Despite the problems you've been facing though your scene looks very impressive so far! I really like the way the assets you used for the houses looks and how you used varying styles instead of just one.

Have you considered cutting out some elements from your game besides the housing interiors? As you said, time constraints will impact our plans, and I feel that making your game less complicated and cutting down on your mechanics and plans will help make a functional game in the time we have left. I also suggest following some tutorials for implementing the lighting features of your game if you havent done so already to make things easy!

    All the best,
    Kay

  5. Hi Alex,

Sorry to hear about your difficulties with the Unity software and your laptop! I was in the same boat with my laptop at the beginning so now I just use the software on the Macs in college. It's a lot less time consuming as they're much quicker.

Your game looks great so far. You've made some good progress. I like the idea of a few main scenes within the game. I'm sure it will be fun designing each area. Will there be items around each that the player can collect? What kind of avatar will the player have? There are a couple of asset packs with some characters on the Unity store that you might find useful.

Best of luck with the rest of the game. Can't wait to see the end product!

  6. Hi Alex,

I really love the aesthetic of your town. It just feels very RPG-homely. I fully understand your pain regarding Unity frying up crashing your laptop; happened to me only once and it's already making me paranoid. But you have a clear direction as to what you need to do in the future in the game and that's a great thing! I can barely get my script up and running at the moment so it's great to see someone making things work for once.

    Good luck on your game!
    Have a nice day!

Your game looks to be coming along nicely sorry to hear how long it took you to bake your scene makes me worry for my own. Hope everything goes well for you with the rest of your scripts for your collectables and the monsters you mentioned.

Best of luck with your game.
